Party starter…Always massive at Love Unlimited HQ and still sounding so good after nearly 18 years - pure funk stylings out of New York and surprisingly via the house label eight ball records. ‘Huh’ samples Kool and the Gang’s killer beats from ‘N.T.’ one of the most sampled records of all time.

Le Disco: Tele Music Remixed

Courtesy of the lovely people at djhistory they have recently released a whole album of never-heard original disco, lovingly retouched by some of the world’s finest remixers.

In 1979 the cream of French and British session musicians gathered to record some of the most scorching disco music ever committed to vinyl. As a series of ‘Disco & Co’ albums on the Tele Music library label, this ended up as radio talk-show sound-beds and backing music for car chases on French cop shows.

Today an original copy of the Arpadys LP goes for £300, if you can find one. As a service to disco, DJhistory has unearthed the original tapes and recruited an all-star cast of splicing fingers – the Unabombers, Ray Mang, the Idjut Boys, Leo Zero, Mudd, Al Kent, Faze Action, Mudd and Toby Tobias – to polish them up for today’s dancefloors. The results speak for themselves.

All of the re-workings are top-notch with the love unlimited fave’s being Al Kents re-work of ‘Cold Coke’ followed closely by Leo Elstob’ string laden ‘Babys Band’

We’re feeling very excited about this mix from Crazy P’s very own Chris Todd, aka Hot Toddy. An incredibly talented musician, DJ and producer, his band Crazy P have just released their latest studio album “Stop Space Return” on 20:20 vision, which you can purchase, right now, here. They’re amazing live - don’t miss them. We caught them at El Diablos in Manchester for their album launch recently and noted just how much their sound and live show had evolved in the past six months. Undeniably disco, but with a tougher edge incorporating house and acid tweaks. The presence of Danielle Moore on stage is really something to behold.

Anyway, this is about Hot Toddy - Chris has been writing music under the name of Hot Toddy since around 1998. His first releases were on the Nottingham based label Neon Heights and then he produced two albums and a load of singles on Paper Recordings. Then things went a bit quiet what with Crazy P being so busy.

With DJ gigs and lots of new material in the pipeline, we’re going to see alot of more of Hot Toddy, which is really good news - he’s such a fucking top guy. This mix is a blinder - enjoy!

From 1989 “Doing Our Own Dang” is a slice of disco sampling Hip-Hop thats been on revival pressure of late at love unlimited…with the Jungle Brothers and a who’s who from the native tongues, a coalition of New York Rappers, including De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah and Monie Love from the UK dropping rhymes over the massive disco break & vocal samples of Raw Silk’ “Do it to The Music”

Another disco-hip-hop sub from the JB’s that’s worth seeking out is the Philadelphia sampling “What U Waitin 4″ with Tony Humphries on remix duties.

Norman Whitfield RIP

Sadly soul colossus Norman Whitfield has passed away this week. Well known for his work with Motown label during the 1960’s and credited as being one of the creators of the Motown Sound, he was also instrumental in the sub-genre of psychedelic soul.

A truly talented writer and producer responsible for some amazing music from Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Gladys Knight, The Undisputed Truth and Rose Royce.

Thank you for the music & RIP Norman.

Bill Brewster’s Limited Love Mix

It’s been a bit quiet on the love unlimited of late, so it’s great to kick things off again with an exclusive mix from DJ Historian Bill Brewster.

Bill runs the DJHistory website with partner-in-crime Frank Broughton. They also run regular parties under the Low Life banner and the new Secret Weapons (monthly at the Big Chill Bar, every second Thursday). DJHistory will shortly be opening a digital download store selling rare old music and collectors tracks.

The first major project is to be Le Disco: TeleMusic & Arpadys Remixed, including edits and mixes from Prins Thomas, Todd Terje, Idjut Boys, Faze Action, LeoZero, Al Kent, Mark E, Unabombers, Mudd, Pete Herbert, Bonar Bradberry, Woolfy & Shady, Foolish Felix and Phoreski.

DiY soundsystem is a DJ collective that formed around 1989 in Nottingham. Whilst being well known for kick starting the free party scene in the midlands, DiY also put on some serious club nights including Bounce, Serve Chilled, the Doghouse and Sponge. On the streets of early nineties Nottingham, in the run up to the weekend, the one question on everyone’s lips would be:

Latin Polar Bear Disco

Here we have a guest mix from ‘professor’ Eddy, a regular to the site who has a show called ‘Soul Searching’ on Laid Back Radio and a Slow Disco 2 podcast. The mix is called Latin Polar Bear Disco. The prof explains:

The idea behind the mix was to put together some refreshing tunes for sweaty days and some warm tracks for chilly days (or something like that…). And I wanted to use the Latin polar bear not only as a metaphor for the music, but it stands a little bit for me as well, because I’m partly French and partly Dutch.
