Hailing from North Carolina Ben King was part of the soul group the drifters finally leaving in 1960 over royalty & money disputes, it was at this time that he adopted the more memorable stage name of Ben E King and continued to release his music through the Atlantic records label.
Big hits like ‘Spanish Harlem’ and ‘Stand By Me’ followed quickly. Towards the mid seventies his output had an emphasis on funk with the classic “Supernatural Thing’ and ‘A Star in the Ghetto’
‘A Star in the Ghetto’ was co-performed with Scottish funk group the Average White Band who had been signed to Atlantic and re-located to NYC, they also recorded an album together.
Sampled by NWA on ‘It Aint Ruff’ this track has amazing strings, killer vocals and a tight arrangement by the average white band.
